On August 8, the HRD Ministry introduced a proposal for scrapping JEE Advanced while stabilizing [url= ]JEE Main[url] to be conducted twice a year in order to revamp the allocation system of the qualified students from branch-wise allocation to institute-wise allocation and reduce the dependence on coaching centers. The proposal also asks for scrapping courses and let the prime institutions mentor other engineering colleges.
During the 52nd Council meeting, the members concertedly agreed to let IITs decide the fee structure for international undergrads and there will be no hike in tuition fee for them. The Union HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar added, 鈥淪WAYAM will provide support and assistance to the IIT Pal by helping the aspirants in preparing for JEE.鈥?Another major decision made by the council include: IITs will mentor minimum 5 engineering colleges in its vicinity to enhance the quality of engineering and technical education in the country.
Bhaskar Ramamurthy, Director IIT-Madras, stated, 鈥淪ince last year, JEE was conducted in online mode. We constantly strive to improve the examination system. Allocation of the institute should be done, based on the student鈥檚 preference and merit at JoSAA (Joint Seat Allocation Authority) level.鈥?The Ministry settled on the decision that IIT will independently look into the changes driven by the institutions and make the decisions when they feel the need. About the matter of institute allocation instead of the branch during JoSAA counseling, most of the IITs disagree with this idea.
The proposal referring to JEE Advanced was to set up a committee to discuss the concern of increasing dependency on coaching centers and to structure a scientifically designed entrance examination system to assess the potential of the aspirants. However, the Council anonymously decided to not set up a separate committee. IITs and the Joint Admission Board are seriously concerned about the standard of the examination and are continuously working to improve the same and doing the reforms.
The proposal of the radical overhaul of IIT education by doing away with the JEE Advanced examination was based on the idea of putting an end to the flagship courses at the IITs. The Alumni and IIT faculty, with the support of government, came up with the proposal of converting IITs into the premium institute. An institute that offers postgraduate education and schedule semesters to teach a selected group of ten students from each mentored colleges.
IIT Director, said, 鈥淭he idea of IITs adopting more research-based approach by giving preference to Masters and Ph.D. program could give productive results. However, this cannot be practiced until we do not have institutes to match the level of IlTs and which can teach at the undergraduate level including the IITs.
